My journey into data science is deeply rooted in my scientific background and passion for solving complex problems through technology. While studying Biomedical Science at university, I discovered that my real strength and enthusiasm lay not in traditional laboratory work, but in the power of data and computational methods to drive innovation.
After graduating, I moved into industry as a Laboratory Scientist at Mushroom Advice & Analysis, where I pioneered the use of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for the analysis of highly heterogeneous mushroom compost. I developed and validated a multi-variate calibration model that successfully adapted a technology typically reserved for homogeneous materials, showcasing both my technical expertise and problem-solving skills.
Building on this foundation, I transitioned into data-centric roles within the NHS, first as an Information Analyst and later as a Database Specialist. In these positions, I applied my mindset to optimize data workflows, automate manual processes, and improve data quality consistently driving smarter, more efficient, and more reliable systems.
In 2014, driven by a desire to deepen my expertise, I pursued a Master's degree in Data Science. This formal training strengthened my skills in programming, statistical analysis, and predictive modelling, aligning perfectly with my ambition to combine science and technology to create data-driven solutions.
At TSYS, I further broadened my experience by working across business intelligence, data engineering, and production support. I led automation initiatives using Python, optimized SQL databases, and improved data pipeline reliability to support the business, consistently delivering solutions that enhanced operational efficiency and reduced downtime.
Since leaving my last role, I have actively invested in my professional development, building neural networks, advancing my Python capabilities, and deepening my knowledge of cloud technologies. Every project and challenge has reinforced my commitment to applying scientific rigor and creativity to real-world problems, fuelling my passion for the endless possibilities within data science.
